Feeling Shallow Again.

Discussed:Kaboodle

Upon Rachel’s suggestion, I have moved my lists of stuff over to Kaboodle.

While Boxed Up is very nice and simple, Kaboodle not only allows me to add almost anything on the internet with a simple clickety-click of the mouse (and in the exact color, etc. I am looking at, too!), it appeals greatly to my list making tendencies. Why limit the lists to things I want? I can make lists for all kinds of things! Muahahahaha!

So far, I’ve made one for the stuff I want, my makeup bag, and my hair/face products. So, you know, if you’re interested in what I want/what I already have and use, head on over to my kaboodle. The listmaking has just begun.

And don’t forget to add me if you’re already on there! :)

Brilliant!

Tuesday, June 3rd

Can I just direct everyone to the awesomeness that is the new setup of Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic/Piperlime’s website?

This is the most brilliant thing I’ve ever seen!

You can shop at any of the Gap Inc. stores, shove all that stuff into one online shopping basket, and pay for it all at once. Oh, yeah, and combine the shipping.

This is frickamazing!

Dialogue: A Pair Of Complaints About Adobe

Monday, June 2nd

(Joey and I were discussing the various merits (and demerits) of Adobe Illustrator. Edited somewhat for readability.)

June 2nd, 2008, 3:20PM
Joey: well, it’s a matter of learning a different program
Joey: it would be cool if it worked like photoshop
Joey: but then everyone who’s been using it for years would have to relearn it
Cameron: yeah, that’s the eternal justification for the legion of inconsistencies between adobe’s products
Cameron: i’m not buying it
Joey: yeah, i mean, it would be nice if they all started moving in a more similar direction
Joey: but you realize that if that happened then you’d have to relearn some of the things you do in photoshop
Cameron: but then it’d work for everything!
Cameron: why is this such a foreign concept?
Cameron: consistency, people!
Cameron: it’s not hard to relearn hotkeys
Cameron: but it IS hard to not smash my monitor when i am using 3 different programs simultaneously that are all made by the same company, all part of the same suite, and have completely different behaviors and hotkeys
Joey: well, the hotkeys thing is easy
Joey: they could allow you to select
Joey: legacy or new
Cameron: i also hate the assortment of dialog boxes with the ‘ok’ button that you hit all the time in photoshop or illustrator
Joey: like what?
Cameron: ‘please enter a value between 0 and 999999.’
Cameron: why not just switch to the max value if the user types something bigger?
Joey: oh yeah, that pisses me off
Cameron: just one example
Cameron: and you have heard my rant about pasting in illustrator, right
Joey: don’t know
Cameron: ok, here is my pasting rant:

Feeling a little shallow.

Monday, June 2nd

So I’ve decided to start keeping my Boxed Up list running all the time as a running wish list of things to buy/insight into my buying habits for anyone who cares.

I noticed it’s a lot of clothes, hair and makeup stuff. I guess the reality is that’s kind of what girls most commonly have on their to buy list. So I just wanted to say I’m not really that shallow. Just keep in mind this is my “wish” (i.e. NOT the Must! Buy! All! These! Things!) list.

But it is kind of interesting to see everything I think about buying all in one place. I’m betting it will also be interesting to see what actually gets bought and what I’m spending my money on.

Anyhoo. Feel free to look around and if you have any product reviews/advice, let me know!

Very, very caffeinated.

Discussed:caffeine Starbucks werewolves

Over the weekend, we went to visit Cameron’s family in SC, which was quite fun but also left me a little exhausted. Apparently sleeping for 11 hours last night didn’t quite do the trick for me and I wasn’t exactly up and at ‘em this morning. So I decided to go get a coffee from Starbucks.

Holy molasses.

Dune: What is even going on?

Thursday, May 22nd

So I’m back from watching Dune! Wow!

Previously my only experience with Dune was on a summer day when it was too hot to go outside and I was too young to drive. Which meant I was trapped inside to watch TV. And Dune was on. It was the only thing on. And OMG it was on for HOURS - every 30 minutes or so I’d give up trying to find anything else to watch and finally turn to it to Dune only to turn the channel away after about 5 minutes. I couldn’t handle it.

As you may or may not have read I have a slight obsession with Kyle MacLachlan in his golden years.

Stone Cold Fox.Stone Cold Fox.

And doesn’t this preview get you excited?

Clearly I had to give Dune another chance.

Reviewing Taco Bell: The New Value Menu

Wednesday, May 21st

As you may have previously ascertained, I enjoy a number of things about Taco Bell, the least of which is the actual food.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t by any means suffer through the food. A good CrunchWrap Supreme or Cheesy Gordita Crunch can really hit the spot, and does just that about once a week on average (Dear Anthony Bourdain, I’m sorry. Love, Cameron). But it’s not just the food — it’s the whole package. The imaginary food names. The awful typeface. The weird purple/pink/teal early 90’s semi-New-Mexico faux-adobe construction. The tiny list of ingredients (and the necessarily bizarre combinations thereof). The hammy commercials. It’s all very … endearing.

Just consider the just-launched and ridiculously-named “New 79¢ 89¢ 99¢ Why Pay More Value Menu” (note: if phrases like “Get Your Grub On” and “Why Pay Mo’” cause you physical pain, do not click that link.). For no particularly apparent reason, Taco Bell has chosen to yet again redesign its Value Menu — and this time there are new offerings. And if you should know one thing about me, it’s that I love new Taco Bell menu items.

This Post Is Eventually About Books

Friday, May 16th

I know I owe you an article on Quicksilver, but I’m going to write about books. (My primary excuse is the amount of time it takes to compile screenshots into something reasonably understandable. But fear not; all that means is I’m going to make sure it’s worth reading.)

My secondary excuses, however, are legion, spanning time, space, and medium. For instance, two days ago I bought an XBox 360 and Grand Theft Auto IV. I now have access to dozens of free game demos, some distressingly addictive arcade games, and an insanely interactive full-size metropolitan city (including some extremely entertaining multiplayer) — not to mention the looming opportunity I now have to buy any number of used XBox games for pocket change. (I’ve never owned a current gaming system, which significantly adds to my excitement.)

We constantly have 3 movies from Netflix on top of our TV. Last night we caught up on The Office via Hulu, through which we also need to watch the latest 30 Rock. Indiana Jones hits theaters next week. I’ve forgotten about Top Chef for 3 weeks now. Every morning my RSS reader (a sprightly 14 feeds) hits me with dozens of new posts to read. Yesterday my newest issue of The Believer arrived, which means I now have 4 issues of which I have only read Sedaratives (and maybe the one interview/article about a person whose name I recognized). I’m also putting a lot of time into my upcoming photography site.

I am clogged with entertainment. I already feel like an amusement-bloated American and I haven’t even upgraded to HD. How do people manage to own (or ever need) DVRs? Digital cable? That 5-movie Netflix plan? I have a very low tolerance for most all media (too low, I am told) but I already have more entertainment at my fingertips than I could ever handle. If I was any less critical, I’d be drowned — submerged — in things I found entertaining.

Sigh. Alright, this post is about books. Let’s talk about books.

Dune!

So I’ve decided since Kyle MacLachlan didn’t own those dogs and didn’t have that website in the 80’s or early 90’s it’s still OK for me to have a crush on him within that time period.

That said, Dune is arriving at our house today!

Yeah…I know what I am getting myself into.

But, let me say this!

  • Paul Atreides is a stone cold fox.
  • Sting.
  • Reviewing YouTube clips has made me decide this is worth an actual viewing (rather than the 10-minutes-per-half-hour viewing I did once when it was on TV).

I already have plenty to say about Dune but I’m gonna wait until I’ve watched the whole thing, then report back here later.

I was so disappointed.

Tuesday, May 6th

We’ve been watching a lot of David Lynch movies/TV shows lately, which means a lot of…

this guy:

this guy:

and a surprising amount of this guy:

I know what you’re thinking about the third guy. “Isn’t that Reverend Lowe from Silver Bullet and the scary “Dad” from The People Under the Stairs?” You are correct. Approximately 172 viewings* of those movies combined have left me scarred when it comes to that guy, and I’m still not accustomed to seeing him without an eye patch. Or in any role where he’s supposed to be a good guy. Gah! He’s just so creepy!

Anyway. We’re not here to talk about that guy.

We’re here to talk about guy #2. Agent Dale Cooper, aka Kyle MacLachlan, aka The Hotness.

Theme Parks #1

So we’ve come to the #1 Florida Attraction that never should have closed. I’m going to try to make it through this one without crying. Seriously. Here we go.

Theme Parks #1 - Marineland, Marineland, Florida

Opened: 1937-38. Closed: Still open…well sort of.

If within my lifespan we discover time travel is possible, I want to make one trip: Marineland of Florida. If possible, I would make a couple of stops on the way: Marineland 1940, 1960 and 1980, to make the experience complete. Read More »

Theme Parks #2 - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney World, Orlando

Opened 1971. Closed: 1994.

The first time I went to Disney World was my Epcot visit when I was 6. Believe it or not, my first visit to the Magic Kingdom at Disney World was the summer I was 10 years old. That’s right, even living in Florida I didn’t make it to Magic Kingdom until the ripe old age of 10.5. That visit was the only time I got to ride 20KL, as they closed it the same year (on my birthday, no less. They closed 20,000 Leagues the Ride on my birthday. Thanks, Disney.)

Being a sea life/sea anything fanatic, and at the time wanting to grow up to be a marine biologist, not to mention having read and watched the book and movie of the same name, I was really excited about riding 20KL. Pretty much the only rides I really rememeber from that trip are Space Mountain and 20KL. Read More »

Cameron says to tell you all that he is very sorry he’s not yet enlighted all of you regarding Quicksilver, and that he will return to do so next week. He got a new film scanner, so that is currently occupying his free time.

I’m working on finishing the countdown, mostly because I am really excited about revealing the #1 attraction that never should have closed, and also because I have 2 more blog topics I’m excited to write about, one being a recent disappointment, the second invloving an assignment that is cinematic in nature.

On with the rides!

Theme Parks #3 - Kongfrontation, Universal Studios, Orlando

Opened: 1990. Closed: 2002.

I’ve noticed more than a few of the attractions I’ve mentioned in this countdown were located at Universal Studios Orlando. Come to think of it, Universal has rotated out pretty much all the inventory I really cared about, with the exception of Jaws. (If they ever close that, I am never going back, and I mean never. Not only is it great, it is an integral part of the Scariest Thing I Can Think Of, which is a topic for another time.)

This is the last time Universal will appear on the countdown, and is definitely the largest dissapointment in the park.

Kongfrontation…where do I begin?

Theme Parks #4

Thursday, April 24th

Now that we are in the top 5 on this theme parks listing, we’re getting to rides that I’m really ticked aren’t running any more. Which means I have to work a little harder to actually be informational in what I am saying and not just break into a rant.

That said…

Theme Parks #4 - Back to the Future, Universal Studios Orlando

Opened: 1991. Closed: 2007.

I really can’t think of a movie that is more deserving of a theme-based ride. Not only does this movie star Michael J. Fox, it’s about time travel. Interestingly, time travel is one of the few topics in the world that can be an awesome plot basis for any type of movie…comedy, blockbuster, drama, romance, thinker, action…really, any type.

Additionally, BTTF has one of my favorite movie songs ever. Anyone? Anyone? I’ll give you a hint:

Don’t need money / Don’t take fame / Don’t need no credit card to ride this train!

That’s right, it’s “Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News.

You can clearly see this movie not only has all the elements for successful box office results, but for an awesome ride.

Theme Parks #5 - Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies, Universal Studios Orlando

Opened: 1990. Closed: 2003.

Yes, that is right. Someone actually closed an attraction that showcased the work of one of the most awesome filmmakers, oh, ever. As if it were not bad enough that Universal phased out Charlton Heston, they also got rid of good old Mr. Hitchcock.

I’ll admit I am a little on the crazed side of biased when it comes to Hitchcock, but I am fairly certain that everyone in the world needed to see this attraction. A Hitchcock fan? Great! You will love it. Not a Hitchcock fan? Great! You will be! Read More »
